AFCON 2017: Senegalese legend Diouf says Cameroonian footballers who boycotted are now regretting
Senegalese football legend El-Hadji Diouf has lashed out at Cameroonian internationals Matip and Nyom for refusing to take part in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations. The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon have qualified for the final of the tournament despite the absence of Nyom and Matip, who respectively play for West Brom and Liverpool.
“I do not understand people who refuse to serve their country,” said the former Senegalese striker in an interview on Friday with the BBC. “Reggae legend Bob Marley said,” If you do not know where you are from, you will not know where to go, “said Diouf, suggesting that footballers must play in their national team.
The Senegalese goal merchant did not stop there. “Certainly, they (Nyom and Matip) will be regretting now for not playing in this competition,” insisted Diouf, who raised the question of whether Cameroonian footballers who boycotted their national team will remain in Europe at the end of their career.
“It’s always hard to be African, because you can be the best African coach, but you’ll never get manage PSG, FC Barcelona, Liverpool or Manchester United. I often tell boys to never reject their country, because Africa is the future of this world, “he continued. El Hadji Diouf has played for seven British clubs, including Liverpool, Bolton and Blackburn. With the Lions of Senegal, he played the 2002 AFCON and the World Cup of that same year.
Cameroonian players André Onana (Ajax), Guy N’dy Assembe (Nancy), Maxime Poundje (Bordeaux), André-Frank Zambo Anguissa (Marseille), Ibrahim Amadou and Eric Maxim Choupo Moting (Schalke) refused the call from Head coach Hugo Broos for the Gabonese expedition.
