Yaoundé seeks information on pilgrims in Mecca and Medina as Middle East tensions persist
Cameroon is moving to strengthen its oversight of nationals undertaking religious pilgrimages in Saudi Arabia, as diplomatic missions across the region reinforce protection measures amid persistent Middle East tensions.
The Cameroonian Consulate General in Jeddah has issued a communiqué calling on pilgrimage supervisors and travel agencies to submit detailed information on Cameroonian pilgrims currently in the country.
The directive targets in particular Cameroonians performing the Umrah, the minor Islamic pilgrimage, during the Ramadan period, a peak travel season to Mecca and Medina.
Dated March 5, 2026, the document states that the initiative forms part of preventive measures ordered by the Cameroonian government in light of the regional security situation. The consulate is asking group leaders, whether already in the holy cities or preparing to depart, to provide several categories of information: arrival and departure dates, airlines and flight plans, the exact number of pilgrims under their supervision, accommodation addresses in Mecca and Medina, and contact numbers for group leaders in Saudi Arabia.
Consular authorities said the information is needed to allow the diplomatic post to ensure “appropriate monitoring” of the Cameroonian community on pilgrimage and to maintain “up-to-date” data on nationals within its jurisdiction.
The move comes as the geopolitical climate remains marked by recurring tensions across parts of the Middle East. Diplomatic missions from several countries have been reinforcing monitoring and protection arrangements for their nationals in response.
For Cameroonian authorities, the aim is to anticipate any deterioration in the security situation that could affect their citizens. The consulate noted that the requested information could facilitate assistance or coordination measures should conditions worsen.
The diplomatic post urged pilgrimage supervisors and travel agencies to transmit the requested data promptly. While the communiqué does not point to any specific threat against Cameroonian pilgrims, it reflects the authorities’ intention to strengthen their response capacity in what they describe as an uncertain regional environment.
