Akere Muna challenges Biya’s candidacy ahead of October elections
Cameroon is facing a high-profile legal challenge ahead of its October elections. Opposition leader Akere Muna has approached the Constitutional Court to block 92-year-old President Paul Biya from standing for another term.
Muna argues that Biya, who has long delegated key responsibilities, is not physically or mentally fit to govern. He cites Article 118 of Cameroon’s Electoral Code, which stipulates that a candidate must be capable of carrying out the duties of office.
The case highlights growing scrutiny over Biya’s continued rule, as the veteran leader seeks what would be his eighth term in office.
