Biya regime says former Minister Marafa is a common prisoner

The CPDM government has rejected calls by the United Nations for the immediate release of former Minister Marafa Hamidou Yaya. The Biya regime responded on Friday against an earlier position adopted on June 2, 2016 by the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, following its 75th session in the month of April.

To the regime in Yaounde, the former minister of state, sentenced by the Supreme Court on the 18^th of May 2016 to 20 years in prison for intellectual complicity and misappropriation of public funds, worth 29 million US dollars, about 14.5 billion CFA francs that was meant to acquire a Boeing Business Jet for the travels of the Head of State remains a “common criminal and a common prisoner and nothing more than that” noted Issa Tchiroma Bakary, Minister of Communication and government spokesman.

The government spokesman argued that the Cameroonian justice system found him guilty of the facts of embezzlement of public funds for which he was prosecuted, and sentenced therefore to 20 years in prison in accordance with the penal code and the Constitution which is the fundamental law of the country.

Buea: Mayor Ekema Patrick takes on Barrister Tambe Tiku, says the National Commission on Human Rights and Freedom is badly in need of a decent leader

The Mayor of the Buea city council Hon. Ekema Patrick has reacted to human rights violation claims made by the South West Regional Secretary of the National Commission on Human Rights and Freedom. The outspoken mayor said in a letter addressed to the commission that its leader, Barrister Tambe Tiku has discredited the commission’s reputation established by President Biya as an institution for consultation, dialogue and concerted action as enshrined in law number 2004/016 of 22nd July, 2004.

Mayor Ekema Patrick opined that Tambe Tiku has been regularly misusing his office to ventilate personal issues and have minimized administrative processes and lacks professionalism. The allegations made by the human rights commission according to the development oriented mayor were not properly tabled by the Regional secretary. Mayor Ekema observed that a phone call should not have been the medium to contact his office.

“The offensive, abusive and arrogant public authority manifested by Tambe Tiku simply represents the small mindedness and narrow vision with which he handles complaints”. Mayor Ekema added that the Regional Secretary Barrister Tambe Tiku has the culture of talking low on public officials including highly respected Fako traditional authorities. Cameroon Intelligence Report gathered that the Human Rights Commission is reportedly losing its credibility as it has unduly extended its function on the Bakweri Land matters which is completely out of focus.

The Buea mayor revealed that the South West region was badly in need of a decent man to run the secretariat of the National Commission on Human Rights and Freedom. Tambe Tiku hinted Ekema Patrick is all over the place and has demonstrated a frightful and unloving attitude towards the respect and neutrality rule that binds ELECAM members. In an interview with Cameroon Intelligence Report which will be published later, the Mayor made it clear that Tambe Tiku should return to his native Manyu and practice party politics. Ekema Patrick also spoke of his commitment to implement every aspect of President Biya’s emergency program for Cameroon in 2035.

Biya receives Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs

President BIYA has met with Salaheddine MEZOUAR, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Kingdom of Morocco. The audience took place on Friday the 8th of July 2016 at Unity Palace.

Speaking to reporters at the end of the audience that lasted over one hour, the Moroccan envoy said it was an immense pleasure and honor for him to meet with the Cameroonian leader to whom he handed a message from the King of Morocco.

Salaheddine MEZOUAR indicated that the audience was prove of the determination of the two leaders to revamp the cooperation between Cameroon and Morocco in the economic, social and security domains, so as to improve the living conditions of the people and to ensure a better future for the youth.

The Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs was accompanied to Unity Palace by the Moroccan Ambassador to Cameroon Lahcen SAILE and the Director General of the Moroccan Cooperation Agency, Abderrahim KADMIRI.

Germany’s new strongman in Yaounde meets External Relations Minister

The new ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Cameroon, Hans-Diester Stell has presented a copy of his letter of credence to the Minister of External Relations, Le Jeune Mbella Mbella.

Before his recent appointment to Cameroon, Dr Hans-Diester Stell had served as German Ambassador to the Mauritius and Comoros Islands and as the German Consulate General in Vietnam.

Uganda National Assembly Speaker in Yaounde for talks

The speaker of the Ugandan National Assembly, the Rt Honorable Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga is in the nation’s capital Yaounde. The special envoy of the Ugandan dictator, President Yoweri Museveni is in Cameroon to solicit support for her country’s candidate, Specioza Wandira Kazibwe who is vying for the post of African Union Commission Chair.

Hon. Alitwala Rebecca has held diplomatic talks with the Prime Minister and Head of Government, Philemon Yang. Specioza Wandira Kazibwe, the former Vice President of the Museveni gang governing Uganda is contesting with two other candidates from Bostwana and Equatorial Guinea.

He is also one of the key leaders of peace and UN Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa. Hon. Kadaga Alitwala was accompanied to Yaounde by Hon Monjowa Lifaka Vice President of the National Assembly.

Former SDF Secretary General Passes On

Professor Asonganyi Tazoacha is no more. The former Secretary General of the Social Democratic Front died at the Yaounde General Hospital on Sunday, July 3, 2016. Rumor about his poor health had circulated in Yaounde recently. He directed the General Secretariat of the SDF between 1994 and 2005, before being expelled from the party during an extraordinary Council in 2006.

The late Professor Tazoacha Asonganyui published a 400-page document “Difficult choices in a democracy facade”. In this book, he discussed the problems plaguing the SDF and hinted the party should make amends or will end up regionalize or disappear from the national and international stage.

After Brexit: Senior German officials called for changes in the EU

Senior German officials have called for changes to decision-making processes in the EU after Britons decided to leave the bloc in a shocking referendum. Last week, a newspaper said post-Brexit concerns have prompted EU leaders to draw up a controversial plan aimed at morphing the remaining member states into a giant “superstate.”

On Sunday, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble urged the bloc to take an “intergovernmental approach” in dealing with problems when they see that the European Commission does not tackle the issues. “If the Commission doesn’t get involved, then we should take the matter into our own hands and solve problems between governments,” he said in an interview with the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag.

Schaeuble criticized the EU for taking too long to make decisions on the refugee crisis last year, while denying that he aimed at weakening the European Commission. “I’m just saying that it and we need to be more pragmatic and faster,” he said.

“FBI will not indict Hillary Clinton” Trump says

US presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump says that Hillary Clinton, his possible Democratic rival in the 2016 presidential race, will not be indicted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) over her email case. The FBI has launched a federal probe into Clinton’s use of a private email server to exchange thousands of classified emails while serving as secretary of state from 2009 to 2013.

The former secretary’s spokesman Nick Merrill revealed on Saturday that Clinton gave an approximately three and a half hours “voluntary interview” to the law enforcement agency over the case and that she was “pleased to have had the opportunity to assist the Department of Justice in bringing this review to a conclusion.”

In reaction to the news, Trump took to his Twitter account later in the day, writing that some “sources” have told him that Clinton will face no charges. “It was just announced -by sources- that no charges will be brought against Crooked Hillary Clinton. Like I said, the system is totally rigged,” he wrote.

About half an hour earlier, the New York businessman had wrote that it would be “impossible” for the FBI to not recommend charges in the case. “It is impossible for the FBI not to recommend criminal charges against Hillary Clinton. What she did was wrong! What Bill did was stupid,” he said, referring to former US President Bill Clinton’s secret meeting with Attorney General Loretta Lynch.

The meeting, which took place last week, spurred bipartisan questions, forcing Lynch to step back from the case. On Friday, Lynch acknowledged that her meeting with Clinton’s husband was a mistake that had cast a shadow over the email investigation. She also said that she fully expected to accept the FBI’s recommendations in the case. Trump had reacted to the meeting by saying it smelled of a conspiracy. “I’m flabbergasted by it, I think it’s amazing, I’ve never seen anything like that before.”

“West sending officials to deal with us under the table” President Bashar al-Assad

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad says Western countries pursue a double-standard approach vis-à-vis Syria, while doing the United States’ bidding in the process. “They attack us politically and then they send officials to deal with us under the table, especially [regarding] the security, including your (the Australian) government,” Assad told Australia’s SBS News in an interview to be aired on Friday.

“They don’t want to upset the United States. Actually, most of the Western officials… they only repeat what the United States wants them to say. This is the reality,” he added.The West and its regional allies, most notably Turkey, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, have been funneling monetary and battleground means to the militants who have been fighting the Syrian government since 2011.

The unwavering sponsorship has been widely denounced as a major impediment to the resolution of the conflict, which, according to an estimation by the United Nations (UN)’s Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura, has estimated has killed over 400,000 people.

A ceasefire brokered by the US and Russia went into effect in Syria on February 27. The truce does not apply to Daesh and al-Nusra Front terrorist groups, the two most brutal ones carrying out a campaign of terror in the Arab country.

Russia has been striving to place a number of other groups, including al-Qaeda-lined Jaysh al-Islam and Ahrar al-Sham, on the UN terror list. The US, however, has been subverting the efforts, alleging that the groups are “moderate” Syrian opposition.

Francophone Beti-Ewondo Diplomacy: Another Yaounde is Cameroon ambassador to the US

The new Cameroon ambassador to the US has met US President Barack Obama in the Oval Office of the White House on Monday. Henri Etoundi Essomba went to present his credentials to the US President. The new Ambassador of Cameroon was appointed by presidential decree signed April 11, 2016.

Ambassador Henri Etoundi Essomba had served previously in Israel. A native of Yaounde, where he was born on March 2, 1949, he holds a 3rd cycle doctorate from the Institute of International Relations of Cameroon (IRIC) Yaounde. The ceremony was attended by the Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs at the State Department, Bruce Wharton.
