Yaounde: Regular parliamentary session to begin on November the 10th

The President of the National Assembly, Cavayé Yéguié Djibril has convened a regular parliamentary session for Thursday the 10^th of November 2016. The speaker made the information public via a broadcast on state radio and television today in Yaoundé the nation’s capital.

The Cavayé Yéguié Djibril communiqué did not disclose the items on the parliamentary agenda. However, Cameroon Intelligence Report gathered from a sister publication, Cameroon-info.net that the session at the Ngoa-Ekelle palace will scrutinize and vote next year’s budget. Approximately three months after their last session, the MPs will be meeting as from 11:00 am come Thursday the 10^th of November.

Fake fiscal stamp network dismantled in Garoua

A fake fiscal stamps network has been dismantled in Garoua, the chief city in the north region of the country. Cameroon Intelligence Report learned that the criminal schemes of the gang were uncovered following cooperation between the regional service of the taxation department and the North police.

Police sources say the fake stamps were manufactured in small quantities and sold to young candidates for official examinations and for jobs application formalities.

However, concerted actions undertaken by the North tax office in collaboration with policing establishments helped the government to put off the fake stamps circuit. The members of the group are currently in police drag net.

2016 Women AFCON: Ngatchu and the girls moving slowly but surely

The Indomitable Lionesses’ camp has been reinforced after the arrival of six professionals who were delayed at the level of their foreign clubs. They are; midfield play maker, Raissa Feudjio, attacker Ngono Mani, Bengono Catherine, Agathe Ngani, Nkada Agnes and Grace Ngock Yango.

The nation is still expecting Aboudi Onguene, Marie Awona, Leuko Yvonne, Fallone Meffoumetou and the sensational Gaelle Enganamouit. The U-17 captain of the national female team, Soline Djouba has been co-opted into the training sessions. The six players come at a time when their teammates are already in camp for the 2016 AFCON to begin in two weeks.

The girls of Carl Enow Ngatchu began their final training after a short break following the annulment of the return leg friendly against Kenya. To further improve on their play tactics, the lionesses will play two friendly matches against the East African Regional Champions, Tanzania in Yaoundé on November 10 and 13.

The Lionesses have been on an encouraging progress in form and style. According to some football pundits, recent victories recorded by the Lionesses against Mali and Kenya, both participants at the upcoming 2016 Women AFCON pundits is a plus to the Cameroonian team.

Race for the White House: Obama says If Clinton wins North Carolina, she’ll win 2016

US President Barack Obama places “the fate of the Republic” on shoulders of the North Carolina voters, asserting that the former secretary of state will win the US 2016 presidential election if the state’s voters back her.

Rallying for Clinton in Chapel Hill on Wednesday, Obama tied the fate of the election to the Tar Heel State, saying, “We don’t win this election, potentially, if we don’t win North Carolina.”

“I hate to put a little pressure on you, but the fate of the Republic rests on your shoulders. The face of the world is teetering, and you, North Carolina, are going to have to make sure that we push it in the right direction,” Obama said.

The president further asserted that he was serious, saying, “If Hillary wins North Carolina, she wins. That’s why I said the fate of the Republic rests on you. I wasn’t joking.” In 2012, Obama lost the state to Mitt Romney, although he had won it in 2008.

According to an average of recent polls by the Real Clear Politics, Clinton is two-tenths of a percentage point behind his opponent, Republican candidate Donald Trump in the state.

A new CNN/ORC poll of the four battleground states released Wednesday, showed that Clinton is leading in Florida and Pennsylvania and trailing in Arizona and Nevada.

Clinton leads Trump in Pennsylvania by 4 points, 48 percent to 44 percent, and in Florida by 2 points, 49 percent to 47 percent, while Trump leads her in Nevada and Arizona by 6 points, 49 percent to 43 percent and by 5 points, 49 to 44 percent.

Trump has gained around 5 percentage points in Nevada but it is unlikely for him to win the required 270 electoral votes without winning Florida, which has 29.

Jacob Zuma If it’s true, go

South Africa’s corruption watchdog has released the findings of a probe into corruption allegations against President Jacob Zuma. The investigation probed accusations that Zuma allowed a wealthy Indian business family to influence some cabinet post selections to benefit its own business interests.

The 355-page report provided evidence showing that David van Rooyen had visited the Johannesburg neighborhood, where the Guptas wealthy family lives, on the day before he was appointed finance minister.

It “brings to the notice of the National Prosecuting Authority… those matters identified in this report where it appears crimes have been committed,” the Public Protector said in the report. Zuma had sought to block the release of the report, but his lawyers surprisingly dropped the legal appeal earlier on Wednesday.

Prior to the release of the report, police engaged in clashes with protesters calling for Zuma’s resignation over what they called poor leadership. Police fired rubber bullets, stun grenades and water cannon to disperse thousands of protesters in the administrative capital of Pretoria, including outside Zuma’s offices, and other cities.

The demonstrators carried signs that read “Zuma Must Go!” and chanted slogans against the 74-year-old leader. Separate rallies were also held in Pretoria by the two biggest opposition parties, the Democratic Alliance and the Economic Freedom Fighters.

Tony Elumelu Foundation hosts Heads of State,CEO’s, entrepreneurs in 2nd TEF forum in Lagos

The Tony Elumelu Foundation has announced a massive partnership with the African Development Bank, ECOWAS, Coca-Cola and the Nigerian Ministry of Information. The decision emerged at the largest annual gathering of African entrepreneurs that held on October the 30th, 2016 in Lagos, Nigeria. It was a forum where the Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF) hosted approximately 1,000 men and women from 54 African countries, for the 2nd TEF Entrepreneurship session.

President Koroma of Sierra Leone, former Nigerian head of state, General Obasanjo, Governor Ikpeazu, Minister Lai Mohammed and Mrs Folorunsho Alakija were among the movers and the shakers who Joined the over 1,000 African Entrepreneurs at the 2016 Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Forum. Africa’s leading business guru and philanthropist, Tony Elumelu who honored the forum with his presence said “We give to empower and break the cycle of dependency as entrepreneurship is the only path to independence and sustainability.”

The Forum celebrated the 2016 cohort of Elumelu Entrepreneurs, selected from over 45,000 applicants. It was the annual highlight of the Tony Elumelu Entrepreneurship Programme and also witnessed the presence of leading policy makers and business leaders from across Africa, who gave their support to the foundation and its promise to identify, train, mentor and seed a 1,000 entrepreneurs in a decade-long $100 million commitment. Each entrepreneur is eligible to receive up to $10,000 to implement their business plan.

Applauding Tony Elumelu’s promise to not only empower entrepreneurs, but also to tackle the fundamental economic challenges confronting the African continent, President Ernest Bai Koroma of Sierra Leone appealed to other prominent African businessmen to emulate Elumelu. The Sierra Leone leader stated that “Even when we had Ebola in Sierra Leone, Tony was there. His is an example which other successful Africans must follow.”

President Koroma hailed the Elumelu initiative as “a genuinely innovative approach to philanthropy in Africa – an African offering African solution”. “What is unique about this programme is that it not only provides a platform for entrepreneurs to build connections, but they are also being taught how to build their businesses in a sustainable way. Other philanthropists will be inspired to support and promote this philosophy” the President concluded.

In his keynote address, Tony Elumelu observed that “Our ambition is that you become ambassadors for entrepreneurship in Africa – you are a generation of wealth creators, who share our commitment to the economic and social transformation of Africa. Let me tell you about Momarr Mass Taal, the CEO of Tropingo Foods, who has turned his first $5,000 seed capital received from the Foundation last year, into a $1.2 million revenue business. I want many more of these! However, as excited as I am about the 2,000 entrepreneurs that we have selected, this gathering is in some ways bittersweet, as I reflect on the 63,000 ideas we were unable to select – our commitment is to all entrepreneurs in Africa.”

Mr Elumelu challenged all stakeholders from the public and private sectors, civil society, multilateral organizations and all individuals with interest in Africa’s economic development to join hands with the Foundation to support the wider African entrepreneurial community. Said Tony Elumelu “We need to support our entrepreneurs because extreme poverty and economic opportunity rarely coexist in the same place.” He also announced partnerships with regional institutions such as the African Development Bank, ECOWAS, Coca Cola, the International Trade Centre, and the Nigerian Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism and Côte d’Ivoire Ministry of Entrepreneurship.

The two-day forum buzzed with energy as entrepreneurs shared and gained knowledge, built cross-border partnerships and connected with investors and policymakers, fulfilling the goal of fostering innovation and collaboration between entrepreneurs from across Africa.

On Day One, attendees benefited from master classes on traditional and alternative means of financing, sales and marketing, as well as sector specific workshops and an in-depth session on Africapitalism – Elumelu’s economic philosophy that identifies the leading role of Africa’s private sector, including its entrepreneurs, in Africa’s transformation.

Awele Elumelu, CEO Avon Medical, Trustee of the Foundation and wife of Founder, welcomed the entrepreneurs to Lagos and commended their drive and effort in finding solutions to some of the continent’s most pervasive challenges. For his part, the CEO of the Foundation, Parminder Vir, invited entrepreneurs in the audience to continue to build the future and to challenge the flawed perceptions of Africa.

Day Two featured a high-level panel dedicated to identifying policies to strengthen the enabling environment for entrepreneurs, moderated by BBC anchor, Lerato Mbele, with panelists including His Excellency Ernest Bai Koroma, President of Sierra Leone, General Olusegun Obasanjo, Former President of Nigeria, former Prime Minister of Benin Republic, Lionel Zinsou, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Honourable Minister of Information, Tourism and Culture of Nigeria and Mrs. Folorunsho Alakija, Vice Chair of Famfa Oil.

Opening the high-level Panel, Mrs. Alakija congratulated the entrepreneurs, praised TEF’s focus on entrepreneurship and shared her own personal story of perseverance to demonstrate the entrepreneurs need for resilience and doggedness. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo hailed Elumelu’s perseverance and focus on giving back. “By every means, God has made His face shine upon you. You are not the only one, but unlike you, some others do not have the idea of empowering the next generation of Africans in the manner and scale that you are doing.” He further emphasized patience to the young entrepreneurs. In his words, “For strength in life you need a bit of adversity.” He also called on the Nigerian government to implement policies that encourage investors and entrepreneurs to do business in Nigeria.

Former Prime Minister of Benin, Lionel Zinsou, commended the Tony Elumelu Foundation. The former politician noted that “What Tony Elumelu is doing is the exception, not the norm.” Other speakers at the event included Clare Akamanzi, Representative of President Kagame of Rwanda, Kennedy Uzoka, Group CEO of the United Bank for Africa Plc (UBA), Minster of Solid Minerals, Hon. 7000 tickets on sale for the Kassav Cancer tour of Cameroon

7000 tickets have gone on sale for the Kassav Cancer tour of Cameroon to run from December the 16^th to the 22nd, 2016. The organizers of the tour presented as the cultural event of the year in Cameroon, have also announced plans to sell tickets in some neighboring countries of the sub region.

20 years after their last visit to Cameroon, the group will stage on the 20^th of December in Douala and on the 22nd of the same month at the Sports Palace in Yaoundé.

The famous group will also take part in a series of activities under the banner of the fight against Cancer. It is expected that the artists of the group will visit some hospitals in the country.

Eseka train tragedy: Minister Mebo Ngo’o should go and go now

The collapse of the Mányai Bridge in the early hours of October the 21st 2016 on the Douala-Yaoundé highway and the decision by transport minister, Edgar Alain Mebo Ngo’o requesting the Cameroon Railway Company, Camrail to add 8 more wagons on the Intercity service 152 that eventually caused the crash at Eseka is slowly but surely developing another twist.

After his first auditioning by the commission appointed by the head of state, some pro-Mebo Ngo’o media houses are now insinuating that the Friday, October 21 disaster may have been carried out by an unknown criminal gang operating inside the country. The media houses including our national daily, Cameroon Tribune have called for a criminal investigation of the accident and strict government control of the social media.

In some of the reports published by the pro Minister Mebo Ngo’o media houses, the reporters claimed that prior to the Eseka train incident; Cameroonians shared pictures of a train derailment that had occurred several years ago. These images they noted were reportedly accompanied by comments such as “Breaking News” announcing an accident on the Cameroonian railway.

Painting Minister Edgar Alain Mebo Ngo’o as a dedicated and hard working CPDM member of government, the reports revealed that the controversial minister did the right thing to have debunked via the airwaves of the state radio and television news of any train accident in the country. The Mebo Ngo’o media houses now say the real derailment announced to Cameroonians moments after the denial of the Transport Minister indicates that there was a diabolic harsh ploy behind the train crash.

A state prosecutor from the Mfoundi High Court in Yaoundé has been speaking of a criminal link to the tragedy and was quoted as saying “Social networks announced the train accident in the early morning. And the accident occurred later. We cannot rule out the possibility of a calculated attack.” The ranting ranges from plain fiction to the most absurd as attempts are also being made to invoke a recent Musango Bus accident to the Eseka Good Friday disaster.

It is now abundantly clear that an in-house operation is underway to undermine the Prime Minister Philemon Yang Commission. What the Mebo Ngo’o pressmen are not saying is that it was supposed to have been Camrail to counter news of any train derailment not a minister of transport. This explained why the almighty transport minister fired the first salvo at Camrail immediately after he had confirmation that indeed the Intercity service 152 had crashed. Mebo Ngo’o failed to read from the same script with the management of Camrail because of his bullying attitude. He should go and go now!!

48 hours after the blame game started over the incident, officials of Bolloré said the train was traveling at an “abnormally high speed.” Cameroon Intelligence Report understands the inter city has not resumed service ever since the crash. However, Yang Philemon and his commission should bear in mind that this was not the first instance that Camrail had to manage peak situations and also that the transport ministry is badly in need of a decent man or woman to clear the mess and confused state of identity that the government department now finds itself in. Mebo Ngo’o should go and please go now!!

UN: Ban Ki-moon sacks South Sudan peacekeeping chief

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday sacked the commander of the peacekeeping force in South Sudan following a damning report showing failure to protect civilians during recent violence in Juba. The report from a UN special investigation found that a lack of leadership in the UN mission culminated in a “chaotic and ineffective response” during the heavy fighting in the capital from July 8 to 11.

Peacekeepers abandoned their posts and failed to respond to pleas for help from aid workers under attack in a nearby hotel, according to a summary of the report. The UN mission known as UNMISS has 16,000 troops deployed in South Sudan, which has been at war since December 2013.

“The special investigation found that UNMISS did not respond effectively to the violence due to an overall lack of leadership, preparedness and integration among the various components of the mission,” said UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric. Chinese peacekeepers abandoned their positions at least twice and Nepalese peacekeepers failed to stop looting inside the UN compound, the enquiry found.

Ban said he was “deeply distressed by these findings” and “alarmed by the serious shortcomings identified by the special investigation”. The UN chief “has asked for the immediate replacement of the force commander”, said Dujarric, adding that other measures would follow. Lieutenant General Johnson Mogoa Kimani Ondieki of Kenya had been the force commander since May.
