Iranian President Pezeshkian will soon meet with Putin
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will soon meet with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, in Moscow to discuss economic and trade cooperation, says Iranian Ambassador to Russia Kazem Jalali.
The meeting would continue a series of high-level diplomatic contacts between Tehran and Moscow, including recent meetings between senior officials in Tehran and Dushanbe, Tajikistan, Jalali told Russia’s state-owned RIA Novosti news agency on Saturday.
The Iranian diplomat explained that “issues such as the International North–South Transport Corridor, energy security, food security and the expansion of trade relations will be discussed at the meeting.”
During his recent visit to Tehran, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told the Iranian president that Putin was looking forward to his participation in the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) summit in Moscow later this month and was also considering holding a bilateral meeting, Jalali noted.
“The presidents of Iran and Russia have held talks on numerous occasions in recent months, discussing a wide range of issues,” he remarked.
“At the same time, the presidents will exchange views on geopolitical, international and political issues” during their upcoming meeting, Jalali added.
The envoy also said that no documents are scheduled to be signed by the presidents of the two countries during the visit.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi separately confirmed the presidential meeting after hosting Lavrov in Tehran earlier in the week.
“Next week, these discussions and consultations will continue in Moscow with the participation of the presidents of both countries,” Araghchi said.
He explained that his meeting with Lavrov covered bilateral relations and major regional and international developments.
Araghchi said both sides focused on “Expanding political and economic cooperation, implementing existing agreements and strengthening the comprehensive strategic partnership between Iran and Russia.”
He further stressed that the two sides had underscored the importance of continued consultations to protect their shared interests and promote regional peace and stability.
Russia and Iran signed a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty in January 2025 during Pezeshkian’s visit to Moscow, establishing a framework for cooperation in political, economic, security, defense, energy, and transportation matters.
