US Vice President JD Vance has reportedly sought “blunt and unfiltered” insight from American generals on the war of aggression against Iran as the war drags on amid dwindling US weapons stockpiles.

Citing multiple current and former officials, The New York Times reported on Thursday that Vance had personally called US military commanders in West Asia, and officers in Europe and Asia, to get their individual perspectives on the war

It said that the calls began within days of the war’s start and continued through the spring and summer as the military assault ran well past the roughly six-week window that Pentagon planners had initially budgeted for.

It added that during the conversations, which covered issues such as objectives, tactics, casualty estimates, what the Iranians would do in the Strait of Hormuz, Vance also asked for a detailed accounting of what remained in the commanders’ stockpiles, and how the transfer of weapons to West Asia would affect their ability to deter China, Russia and North Korea.

“On that last point, the commanders were blunt. They were most worried about their depleted stocks of Patriot interceptors, the backbone of their air defenses. By late spring, one theater was down to fewer than 100 of them,” the report said.

“The war had also exhausted the theater’s supplies of the Army Tactical Missile Systems, which can reach 190 miles, along with stores of the Precision Strike Missiles, which were meant to replace them. Stocks of critical munitions such as these, they told the vice president, were the lowest they had ever seen.”

The commanders’ grave assessments contradicted that of US President Donald Trump who has repeatedly claimed “victory” in the illegal war and dismissed reports about dwindling stockpiles.

The report said, “There was a gulf between the sobering private assessments that Mr. Vance received and what top administration officials, including the president and vice president, have said publicly. Mr. Trump has continued to falsely claim that the United States has already won the war.”

Vance opposed the war against Iran from the outset. However, he has not voiced his frustrations openly, instead defending Trump’s decision vigorously during public appearances.

As a person with limited national security experience before he became vice president, Vance “is now immersed in a costly and inconclusive war that could shadow him in a potential 2028 presidential campaign,” according to the report.

The United States and Israel launched their illegal war of aggression against Iran on February 28.

Forty days later, on April 8, the enemies were forced to accept a ceasefire amid Iran’s resistance, successful retaliatory operations, and a powerful grip on the Strait of Hormuz.

In July, the United States conducted waves of deadly air raids on Iran and imposed a naval blockade of the country in violation of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Islamic Republic, signed on June 17, to end the war.

In response, the Iranian armed forces launched devastating strikes against strategic American targets across West Asia and declared the Strait of Hormuz closed to all traffic.
